12 free campsites in Scotland that feel like the edge of the world

Scotland's right to roam means you can wild camp almost anywhere, and the landscape rewards those who venture off the main roads. Here are twelve spots we keep coming back to.

    1. Sango Bay, Durness A crescent of white sand on the north coast with views to nothing but sea. Park in the lay-by above and walk down. Best at sunset.

    2. Loch Cluanie lay-by A mirror-still loch flanked by mountains on the A87. The lay-by fits maybe four vans. Arrive early.

    3. Camusdarach Beach, Arisaig The beach from Local Hero. Turquoise water, silver sand, and usually deserted midweek. Small car park with a short walk through the dunes.

    4. Glen Etive The road from Skyfall. Twelve miles of single-track along a river with dozens of pull-offs. Midges are fierce in summer — bring a net.

    5. Applecross Peninsula After the Bealach na Bà pass (the steepest road in the UK), the coast road has countless spots overlooking Skye. The sense of remoteness is real.

    6–12

Clachtoll Beach, Oldshoremore, Loch Arkaig, Kinloch Hourn, Elgol on Skye, Sandwood Bay (walk-in only), and the Ardnamurchan lighthouse car park — the most westerly point on the British mainland.

    The golden rule

If a spot looks too popular or too fragile, move on. Scotland's wild places stay wild because people treat them with care.
