The only packing list you need for a European van trip
After 14,000 km across Scandinavia and the Balkans, we've learned a thing or two about what you actually need in a van — and what stays in the drawer the entire trip.
The essentials
Cooking gear. One good pan, one pot, a sharp knife, and a wooden cutting board. That's it. We brought a full set of nesting cookware and used maybe half of it. A French press for coffee is non-negotiable.
Bedding. A proper duvet beats a sleeping bag every time for long trips. Add a fitted sheet for your mattress and two pillows. You'll sleep better, and sleep matters more than any piece of gear.
Clothing. Three of everything: t-shirts, underwear, socks. One pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, one warm fleece, one rain jacket. Merino wool base layers for cold nights in Norway. That's the whole wardrobe.
What we didn't need
The solar shower sat unused for three months — we always found a campsite with facilities or a lake. The portable table and chairs came out twice. The second set of towels just took up space.
The surprise winners
A headlamp. Used every single night. A small Bluetooth speaker for rainy evenings. A dedicated phone mount for navigation — your neck will thank you after eight hours on Norwegian fjord roads.
The rule
If you haven't used it in two weeks, send it home. Your van will feel twice as big.
