Road-tripping with a toddler: survival notes

Three months on the road with a two-year-old. Here's what we learned — the hard way, mostly.

Slow down. Then slow down more.

We planned for 200 km days. We ended up doing 80. Toddlers need to stop, run, explore, eat, nap, and have meltdowns — sometimes all within an hour. Accept it. The trip is better when you're not rushing.

    Routine is your friend

Even on the road, keep mealtimes and bedtime roughly consistent. Our daughter handled the constant change of scenery surprisingly well, but only because her daily rhythm stayed familiar.

    The gear that saved us

    • A portable high chair that clips to any table
    • A white noise machine for naps in noisy campsites
    • Reusable snack bags (you will go through an astonishing amount of snacks)
    • A lightweight stroller for town days
    • Magnetic drawing board for the car seat

    The hardest part

The evenings. Once she's asleep in the van, you're stuck there too. No popping out for a sunset walk or a drink at the campsite bar. Bring books, a good podcast backlog, and patience.

    Would we do it again?

In a heartbeat. She won't remember the fjords or the beaches, but she'll grow up knowing that adventure is normal. And we'll have the photos to prove she was there.
