Van Trips for Families — Europe with Kids
Travelling Europe in a van with kids isn't just possible — it's one of the best ways to do it. No airport queues, no rigid hotel check-in times, no dragging suitcases through train stations. Your home moves with you, nap time happens wherever you park, and every day is a new playground.
The key is picking the right countries, keeping daily distances short, and building routines that work on four wheels. France and Portugal are the easiest starting points: both have excellent municipal campsites (often under €15/night), mild climates, and short drives between interesting stops.
Children under six don't care about cathedrals. They care about rivers, beaches, animals, and ice cream. Build your route around those, and you'll have a trip everyone actually enjoys. The adults get the scenery and the wine; the kids get the freedom they never have at home.
Sample itineraries

Provence & Italian Riviera

Scottish Highlands Loop

Frequently asked questions
- What age can kids start van travelling?
- Any age, really. Babies are actually easier than toddlers — they sleep more and don't try to open the sliding door while you're driving. Most families find the sweet spot is either under 1 or over 4.
- Do we need a special car seat setup?
- Standard ISOFIX points work in most modern vans. Check your specific vehicle before buying — some older conversions only have lap belts in the rear. In the EU, children must use appropriate car seats until they're 135–150 cm tall (varies by country).
- How do we handle schooling on the road?
- For short trips (under 3 weeks), most schools are fine with a holiday request. For longer trips, many families use a mix of workbooks, educational apps, and 'the world is the classroom' philosophy. France and Spain are relaxed about term-time travel.
- What about medical emergencies?
- Carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Download the local emergency number for each country (112 works across the EU). Pack a basic first aid kit and any prescription medications with extra supply.
